![]() Glenn Monday: What are some things you’re always working on? Ian Poulter: When I do get a little haywire, I go back to the basics like ball position and club alignment. I try to work the club away from the ball slightly on the inside. I must guard against my club starting back on the outside, which causes me to lay it off at the top. GM: What do you feel with your grip? IP: I hold the club with controlled comfort. I suggest that you try to avoid tension in the hands, wrists, arms and shoulders. GM: How is your golf swing evolving? IP: I’ve become a better ballstriker. No one swings it perfect — everyone is different and has their own DNA. At the end of the day, providing you’re striking it well, it must mean you’re swinging it well. Better ball-striking is my quest. GM: You love to play this game. How did that love come about? IP: I worked in a pro shop for seven years. I wanted to get out and play the game. I absolutely love this game and I love the pressure. I thrive on it — the more the better. I go out and play and have fun. For me, the golf course is a challenge and an adventure. GM: What advice would you give to the amateur golfers? IP: Get a rangefinder and then go see your local professional for lessons. Glenn Monday is an L.A.-based teaching professional and author of “Know Your Swing.” He can be reached at (310) 322-8924. |
