Jose Maria Olazabal was just 2 years old when he got his first golf club from his father. Nineteen years later he made the European Ryder Cup team. Here are some of his swing thoughts: Glenn: What is the fundamental that you’ve had to work on the most to master? Jose: I have to focus on the path of the swing through the ball. I like to hit the draw, but I have a tendency to come over the top a bit. Glenn: As you work on the draw, do you think of your landing area as 12 o’clock and then you swing out to 1 o’clock? Jose: Yes, especially on the driving range. I exaggerate that feeling so it becomes more natural on the golf course. Glenn: For the amateur who has a driver problem, what tip would you give? Jose: Take a more lofted club. Try a driver with around 11 degrees of loft. Glenn Monday is the author of “Know Your Swing.” He can be reached at (310) 322-8924. |
