In 1988 at age 20, Thomas Levet won the French PGA Championship. He was born in Paris, was runner-up in the 2002 British Open and was on the 2004 European Ryder Cup Team. His father, a Paris doctor, got him started in golf. Glenn: How much time do you spend practicing? Thomas: During tournament weeks, when I have a free day, I'll practice for five hours. My dad taught me to enjoy practice and to enjoy playing golf. Glenn: Your swing shows great tempo, timing, and rhythm. How could the amateur improve in those areas? Thomas: Focus on the fundamentals. Be patient and practice. Glenn: Do you put a lot of focus on your alignment? Thomas: Yes, it is one of my keys. If you are aligned the wrong way, then you have to compensate one way or the other. I will check my grip and my posture at all times before I put the swing in motion. These things eliminate compensation and from there I have a greater trust in my swing. Glenn: What is the favorite tip you like to give? Thomas: I see a lot of amateurs who do not have full enough golf swings. Think of the swing as a complete circle - if you have a full backswing and a full finish, you'll hit it farther and accuracy will come to you. Always try for a full finish, strive to complete the circle. n Glenn Monday is a Los Angeles-based teaching professional and author of "Know Your Swing." He can be reached at (310) 322-8924. |
