WATCH THE VIDEO OF THIS DRILL All too often I see students make a nice move to the top of the backswing only to quickly throw the clubhead ahead of the hands on the downswing, consequently losing the speed needed for distance. A common misconception is that you need to bring the clubhead back to the ball for a powerful impact. But in reality, we want to create a relaxed whip through the hitting area — a move that begins with the body. ![]() If this sounds like your nemesis, try this drill. Make some swings imagining the line at the ball is a finish line (Fig. 1). The goal from the top of the swing is to use the body to get your hands across the finish line before the clubhead. When you accomplish the feeling above, in reality the clubhead will receive a surge of momentum, catching up through the hitting area (Fig. 2) and whipping past your hands into the follow through (Fig. 3). ![]() Matthew Hilton is Director of Instruction at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy at Strawberry Farms Golf Club in Irvine.
