One on One with Mike Weir

The slight Canadian is one of the PGA Tour's steadiest competitors thanks to a stellar short game.

BY GLENN MONDAYPublished: January, 2010

Mike Weir has eight PGA Tour victories, including the 2003 Masters. The left-hander isn’t a long hitter, but his technique and short game are sound.

Glenn: As you’re over the ball, you take the club back about waist high and look at it. Why?
Mike: That’s a rehearsal as to what I want to do. If I can duplicate that on my swing, it makes things easier.

Glenn: So even as you play tournament golf, you’re working on the feel of that moment?
Mike: Exactly. It looks mechanical but I get confidence from working on the precision of that moment.

Glenn: Do you want to match the angle of your backswing through to the finish?
Mike: Yes. I want my backswing, downswing and  follow-through to duplicate the same swing plane.

Glenn: Do you work a lot to keeping your head still?
Mike: Yes. By keeping my head in a steady position, this allows my arms to out-race my body, which is what I want.
