The late Patty Berg was one of 13 founders of the LPGA Tour and the first president of the LPGA. She won 60 tournaments and was a wonderful person. I talked with her prior to her death in September of complications from Alzheimer's disease at the age of 88. Glenn: In the golf swing, what do you see that is common among the pros? Patty: What I see is tempo, timing, rhythm and balance. That's a great winning combination for any golf swing. Glenn: What would help the high-handicapper the most? Patty: Spend more time with your chipping. This helps your mind stay at ease if you miss the green. Glenn: What advice would you give to players who are new to the game? Patty: Find a good teacher and strive for perfection. You have to conquer the little flaws. You have to work at the game. It's not going to come to you, you have to go to it. You have to learn the proper fundamentals. Glenn: You played golf with some great men. Does a moment come to mind? Patty: Yes. I played a lot with Byron Nelson. During one outing, the first three holes I played just terrible, and Byron said to me: "Just move a little closer to the ball." Well, the next hole I parred and then won the next tournament. n Glenn Monday is a Los Angeles-based teaching professional and author of "Know Your Swing." He can be reached at (310) 322-8924. |
