One on One with Paul Goydos

The Long Beach State grad and local standout offers instructional tips with Glenn Monday.

BY GLENN MONDAYPublished: September, 2008

Paul Goydos was born in Long Beach, graduated from Long Beach State and now resides in Coto de Caza. He made a name for himself at this year’s Players Championship, where he wore a “Dirtbags” cap and finished second to Sergio Garcia in a playoff.

Glenn: What is your favorite golf shot?
Paul: I have always enjoyed driving the ball. Knowing my driving distance helps me to avoid fairway traps.

Glenn: As you swing the driver, what grip pressure do you feel?
Paul: During my swing, I want my hands to work together. For me, that means equal grip pressure with both hands.

Glenn: How do you handle pressure?
Paul: First, have an idea of what you want to do and then learn to be yourself under pressure. You’ve got to learn what’s best for you.

Glenn: How can the average player improve?
Paul: Learn a good grip, have good alignment and establish good golf posture. Beyond that, personalize the fundamentals and keep up your practice to improve your timing.

Glenn Monday is an L.A. based Teaching Pro, author of “Know Your Swing.” He can be reached at (310) 322-8924.
