A native of Queens, N.Y., Jim Gormley has been a golf professional for 14 years. The former co-captain of the men’s golf team at California State University-Stanislaus has received multiple accolades from the Southern California PGA, including 2008 Player of the Year.

Gormley qualified for this year’s Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club by winning the Club Car Aggregate Series final at Glendora Country Club.

What was the first thing that attracted you to the game?
The challenge — it’s just you against the golf course.

What inspired you to become a golf professional?
I like to be around the game. After college, I played some mini-tours for a while and soon after decided I was going to get out of golf. I went to work for a commercial real estate company and after a few months into it, I realized how much I missed being around golf.

What’s the best golf tip you’ve ever received?
How important the proper posture and setup is in the swing.

What’s the most challenging thing about being a golf teacher?
Making the student understand how difficult the learning curve is. Most of the students we teach as golf professionals want instant gratification.

What’s the most satisfying thing about being a golf teacher?
Watching and teaching a student who wants to learn and become a better player achieve that goal.

What’s your best round ever and where?
A 62, which I’ve shot twice at Palos Verdes Golf Club.

Whose swing on the PGA Tour do you most admire?
Other than Tiger Woods, I admire Stuart Appleby’s swing the most.

What’s your greatest achievement in golf?
Qualifying for two PGA Tour events, but hopefully there are more of them to come.

What’s your personal motto on the course?
There are no pictures on the scorecard. It’s not how, but how many.

Including yourself, who would make up your ultimate foursome?
My dad, my grandfather and Ben Hogan.
