When Scott Stubbs isn’t teaching or overseeing golf operations at Vista Valley Country Club in northern San Diego County, he’s serving as president of the Southern California PGA.

Stubbs, whose tenure ends in December, was influenced by former SCPGA President Andy Thuney, whom he worked under at Hacienda Golf Club. Stubbs also was head golf professional for the City of Anaheim for eight years.

What are your main responsibilities as president of the SCPGA?
Among other things, the president has the responsibility of running the board of directors, conducting meetings, monitoring committees and picking the committee chairpeople. I make it a point to be present and visible at as many functions as possible, including both national meetings and local meetings for the SCPGA’s five chapters.

Is it tough to balance this role with your work at Vista Valley?
Since I’ve been at Vista Valley, the board of directors has been very kind in allowing me time to perform those duties. It’s certainly a challenge with all those things and being a head professional.

What would you like to see change in the current state of golf in America?
I’d like to see us reach out more to people in an effort to bring them into the game, and make it more affordable at the same time. We also need to be aware of what other organizations are doing in the way of youth sports and try to mirror the success stories.

Has the economy affected your responsibilities as president?
It’s certainly made it much more challenging and the SCPGA’s focus has changed somewhat. I think it’s made me give more time and work that much harder. It’s tough right now — quite a few PGA professionals are out of work, and that bothers me. I wish I could do more. I’ve always put the PGA member first with everything I have done.

What’s the most common problem you see in your students?
Lack of practice and understanding that you need to put in more time to improve. Also, most players don’t work enough on their short games.

Are there are any particular instructors or teaching philosophies that have influenced you?
Homer Kelly’s “The Golfing Machine” early on, and as of late I have tried to read up and understand what the top instructors are doing.

Whose golf game do you most admire, and why?
Tom Watson. I have always liked his rhythm and attitude on the golf course. He plays and swings the same way every time, and I think he accepts the fact that some days are better than others.

What do you enjoy most about teaching?
Bringing new players into the fold and watching experienced players get better.

Including yourself, who would make up your dream foursome, and why?
My father and three sons — but I guess that’s five! I love my family more than anything, there’s no greater joy.

What’s your greatest achievement in golf?
Becoming a PGA member in 1989.
