![]() Scott Wilson was named 2009 SCPGA Professional of the Year (PHOTO: Eddie Meeks) Scott Wilson has been a teaching professional for 19 years and currently serves as PGA director of golf at Vellano Country Club in Chino Hills. He started playing at 14 at Birch Hills Golf Course, and his first birdie at Brea Creek Golf Course is a vivid memory. The 2009 Southern California PGA Professional of the Year enjoys the variety of roles in his job, which include giving lessons and organizing tournaments. What does it mean to you to be Professional of the Year? It means everything to me. It’s a humbling experience knowing my peers nominated and voted for me. I never expected it, and I never set out to win any award, but this is the proudest I’ve ever been to be a PGA member. I am the first to recognize that there are so many deserving golf professionals in Southern California that could win this award. I believe it is an award that I can share with those that helped teach me and were role models to me as a young professional in the PGA. What’s the most challenging thing about being a golf teacher? Practicing and taking time to keep my own game in shape. What’s your favorite golf instruction book, and why? “Golf is a Game of Confidence” by Dr. Bob Rotella. I like his mental outlook for all golfers to be positive. What’s your best round ever, and where did you shoot it? My best round wasn’t my lowest score, but I didn’t make a bogey during a round at Bent Pine Golf Club in Vero Beach, Fla. I shot 69 that day. Who is your mentor or role model, and why? I started taking lessons at 15 from Jerry Wisz at Alta Vista Country Club and then at Alhambra Golf Course, where he has been the director of golf for over 25 years. I started caddying for him in local events, U.S. Open qualifiers and even a Los Angeles Open. He was always a great ballstriker and has been a very good businessman and model for how to be a PGA professional. What’s the most satisfying thing about being a golf teacher? Seeing someone’s eyes light up when they hit a great shot. It says it all. Whose swing on the PGA Tour do you most admire? In today’s game, I like Sean O’Hair’s swing and also his demeanor. What’s your favorite part of the game? Putting. You see the results of a well-played hole or can make up for some of your bad shots on the green. In match play, this can be a great equalizer if you are playing against a better ballstriker. Your most treasured golf possession? My golf ball collection from the top-100 courses (I’ve played 99 of them) and my only hole-in-one golf ball. I hope to add to both collections soon. Who are your golf heroes? Byron Nelson, Arnold Palmer and Tom Watson. But in the local area, my PGA colleagues — guys and gals that are in the business of golf, teaching the game, mentoring junior golfers and making everyone’s enjoyment of the game better. |
