Steve Soule has led golf instruction at Black Gold Golf Club and Black Gold Golf Academy in Yorba Linda since 2002. He started teaching at Bighorn Golf Club in 1993. A year later, he joined Hank Haney’s instructional staff and has been teaching regularly since that time. Soule, who once shot a career-best 66 on the Mountain Course at Bighorn, says he gets even more satisfaction out of helping students get better. What inspired you to become a golf teacher? I prepared myself for a teaching position as soon as I became a professional. Take the knowledge from the best, then make it your own and better. What is the most common problem you see in your students, and how do you fix it? When the club travels too far inside on the takeaway or under the shaft plane. I physically move the student’s club shaft up the correct plane line and explain the need to keep the club moving around the body on the correct plane. What was the first thing that attracted you to the game? My dad, Roger, who was an assistant golf coach at Washington State University. What are your favorite parts of the game? The fun times with my friends, smashing my driver and beating the rest of the field. What professional would you most want to be reincarnated as and why? Arnold Palmer, because he truly is the King. Your greatest achievement in golf? Being able to teach and coach Steven Bowditch on the PGA Tour in 2006 and 2007, and teaching and coaching guests of ESPN/Intersport at the Masters from 2006-2008. What’s your personal motto on the course? Each shot counts! Who are your golf heroes? My dad, Arnold Palmer, and instructors Hank Haney, Jim Flick and Gary Edwin. What is your favorite new golf product? I really enjoy working with my new launch monitor and seeing the information that backs up my teaching. It’s a great teaching and fitting device. |
