(Photo: Eddie Meeks) With 10 years of employment experience at courses in Hawaii, Arizona and California, Russ Onizuka is a veteran when it comes to teaching golf and running a golf operation. Onizuka has helped golfers improve their games, and he’s been recognized for his ability to give them superior product options. Last year, he was named the Southern California PGA’s Merchandiser of the Year in the public category. What inspired you to become a golf teacher? A close family friend said to me, ‘No matter what path you take in life, you will succeed, provided you are willing to work for it. But, remember that success does not define happiness, so do something that you will enjoy and is meaningful to you.’ I have used his advice and can proudly say that having a golf facility as my office is very enjoyable, and providing golfers with a world-class golf experience is very rewarding. What’s the most satisfying thing about being a golf teacher? To help others enjoy the game. It’s such a great feeling to have an influence on golfers shooting their lowest round or achieving their goals. What’s the best golf tip you’ve ever received? When you’re playing in the wind, take more club and swing easier. The common thing I see is many players will not use more club, rather they just swing harder to try and overcome the wind. However, it’s important to remember that the harder you swing, the more spin you create on the golf ball. If you take two or three clubs more, and swing easier, you will notice a lower trajectory and less spin for a more powerful ball flight through the wind. (For more tips on how to handle the wind, see page 60.) How old were you when you started playing golf? I began playing golf when I was 8. At first, I liked the game, but still had distractions from experimenting with other sports. However, when I reached 10, I began enjoying the game more and my passion for the game has continually increased since. Whose swing do you most admire and why? Tiger Woods is nearly perfect in key positions by modern-day standards and generates so much power while maintaining a high level of consistency. What was the first thing that attracted you to the game? The challenge of executing different shots. The game throws so many different challenges at us, and we need to use our creativity and shotmaking abilities to overcome them. What’s your best round ever? I’ve shot 65 twice: at Hawaii’s Kona Country Club and at East Valley. |
