One on One with Stephen Ames

The three-time PGA Tour winner and native of Trinidad and Tobago discusses his golf game.

BY GLENN MONDAYPublished: January, 2009

Stephen Ames is a three-time PGA Tour winner, with his most recent victory coming at the 2007 Children’s Miracle Network Classic. The Trinidad and Tobago native also won the LG Skins Game in 2006 and 2007 and the ’06 Players Championship.

Glenn: How old were you when you started playing golf?
Stephen: I was 13 years old.

Glenn: Did you start taking lessons right away?
Stephen: No, I just began playing in the beginning and just sort of took to it.

Glenn: Today, as a touring pro, what does your teacher work on with you?
Stephen: We work on ironing out my faults. My posture has changed a lot and now I feel taller over the ball. This helps my swing be freer and more comfortable. Also, I’m working on positioning my swing plane for more control.

Glenn: Under pressure, it seems that you have an ability to turn up the focus.
Stephen: I try to think clearly, focus on the target and then trust the swing.

Glenn: How can people best learn the golf swing?
Stephen: Go to a teacher that teaches you to understand and feel the fundamentals. Learn the proper drills and decide for yourself how good you’d like to become.
