I once asked Sam Snead — who many consider to have the best swing ever — what swing he liked most to watch. His answer? Steve Elkington. Here is a little insight from the 1995 PGA Champion. Glenn: How old were you when you first started playing? Steve: I was 10 years old and like everyone starting out, I was a hacker in the beginning. I had a lot of desire to become a better player, so I practiced proficiently. Through that, my game came around and things worked out for me. Glenn: Would you teach the average golfer to learn to draw the ball first or fade it? Steve: My approach would be to first teach the draw and to accomplish that, they need to be aware of the details of the grip and alignment. Glenn: What grip were you taught? Steve: I used the Vardon grip, the neutral position with two knuckles showing on the left hand. Glenn: Any single swing thought that you have always used? Steve: It would be embarassing to tell you all of the thoughts I've used over the years. I've settled on focus and rhythm. Glenn: What is your favorite shot? Steve: I love driving the ball. To me that takes confidence, concentration and lots of practice. I constantly work on my swing. Glenn: Who taught you about the swing? Alex Mercer in Australia. And I still see him occasionally.
