Taking A Stance

Establishing a proper setup makes sure your swing gets off to a good start.

BY AL PETERSENPublished: July, 2006

My golf swing is like two ships passing in the night. The club is going one way and my weight is going the other. It’s a perfect scenario for an accident waiting to happen.

“Before you even start to swing, you have to have a good setup,” said Erik Horve, director of golf at Tustin Ranch. “If your setup is bad, the entire motion will be affected.”

My setup needs to be set aside, to say the least. My head is in front of the ball, most of my weight is on my left foot, my shoulders are parallel to the ground and I don’t bend enough from the hips. Wrong, wrong, wrong and wrong.

“I want to see a slight shoulder tilt to the right, a 50-50 weight distribution and your head a few inches behind the ball,” Horve said. “Without that, you’ll continue to be out of balance during the swing. As your club goes back, your weight shift is going forward, so somewhere during the downswing you’re reversing that.”

To reverse my bad habits, Horve recommended a process that can be repeated on the range or at home in front of a mirror:
• Set your feet shoulder-width apart.

• Flex your knees.

• Tilt your upper body slightly to the right.
• Lean into the ball from your hips.

• Keep your head a few inches
   behind the ball.

When that becomes more natural, start hitting easy shots while maintaining your posture throughout the motion.

“As soon as you get comfortable in your new setup and focus on keeping your head behind the ball, things will start to fall in sequence as we move forward,” Horve said.

Associate editor Al Petersen is working with Tustin Ranch director of instruction Erik Horve on reworking his swing. Actually, they’re starting from scratch — or starting over — since a lot of bad habits need to be corrected. We’re monitoring their progress.
