One on One with Todd Hamilton

As an amateur, Todd Hamilton was a three-time NCAA All-American at the University of Oklahoma.

BY GLENN MONDAYPublished: July, 2005

He played on the Japan Golf Tour for 10 years and last year became the surprise story in the golf world when he won two tournaments — including the British Open in a playoff over Ernie Els — and was honored as the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year at the age of 38.

Hamilton is set to defend his British Open title this month at St. Andrews in Scotland.

Glenn: How’s your swing feeling?
Todd: I try for the same feeling at all times. I don’t try a lot of different stuff. I’ve found five keys that help keep my swing together.

Glenn: What are some of your swing keys?
Todd: Myself, top players and top amateurs are always attentive to grip, posture and aim. I also practice tempo.

Glenn: What advice would you give to amateurs to lower their scores?
Todd: First, practice the chip, the pitch shot and your putting. Second, think yourself around the golf course. Have a strategy.

Glenn: Golfers like to hit the long ball. Any tips to help the amateur?
Todd: Yes. Go slow into the backswing so you can get into a good set position.
