One on One with Tom Lehman

The veteran player chats with Glenn Monday about his strengths.

BY GLENN MONDAYPublished: January, 2005

He had his first lesson when he was a 20-year-old sophomore at the University of Minnesota. Seventeen years later he won the British Open at Royal Lytham and St. Annes after posting a Saturday course record of 64. In 2006, he will captain the U.S. Ryder Cup team.

Glenn: What are your strengths as a player?
Tom: I would put them in this order: A) my driving of the ball, B) my long irons, and C) my chipping. My weakness is the 60- to 70-yard wedge shot, which I’m striving to improve.

Glenn: Any tips to help our readers become better drivers of the ball?
Tom: Yes. You’ve got to feel as if you are sweeping the ball off of the tee. Also, position the ball off of the inside of your left foot.

Glenn: What are your swing thoughts as you practice?
Tom: I’m staying loose and working on the trajectory of my ball and the shape of the flight. If these things are good, I can trust my swing.

Glenn: You are well balanced as you hold your finish. Is that something you work on?
Tom: Yes, I work on that a lot. Amateurs need to be taught about good weight shift and good tempo and that will greatly help their balance. These things, plus keeping a steady head, are big factors in a repeating swing.
