Bunker mentality

Avoiding common mistakes in sand traps will help you get up and down on a more consistent basis.

By Matthew HiltonPublished: December, 2009

One of the keys to avoiding a bladed shot out of the bunker is to hit two inches behind the ball (PHOTO: Eddie Meeks).
Bladed shots and deceleration are the most common flaws when it comes to greenside bunker shots. Following these keys will limit the likelihood of failure and help you get up and down more often.

You can avoid the bladed shot by hitting two inches behind the ball so the clubhead gets below the ball and takes plenty of sand.

Deceleration can be avoided by making sure the clubface is open and letting the club’s acceleration take you to a balanced finish.
