The ability to improve your putting stroke is in the palm of your hands, which can help eliminate excess motion.

There are two important keys for becoming a better putter — having a proper setup and eliminating any excess motion during the stroke. Any additional movement from the wrists, arms, or even the lower body can drastically affect the angle of the putter face and swing path.

This drill helps instill a more consistent stroke.

1. Grip your putter and get into a solid setup position, with athletic posture (knees slightly flexed) and your eyes over the ball.

2. Staying in that position, set your putter to the side and let your arms hang in front of you with the heel pads of your hands touching each other and your palms facing forward.

3. Rock your shoulders back and through, keeping your head and lower body as still as possible while maintaining the contact between your hands.

4. Once you’ve developed a feel for this motion, grab your putter and duplicate the stroke.
