Keys to success

A good setup and proper swing path are essential ingredients to making a fluid motion and solid ball contact.

An athletic setup is crucial to hitting the ball well, and the goal here is to explain why, and pass along a drill to help implement this theory into your game. The main concept is best illustrated by swinging a key on the end of a string. Notice that the key swings in a line around my hand from a vertical position. Understand that when I tilt my hand to approximately a 45-degree angle, you can picture how the string would now follow a path more similar to a golf swing. This is a simple visual aid to better understand the proper swing plane — consider this when attempting to address the golf ball properly.

With your back straight, make some swings at shirt-button height. You will notice that the arms simply relax and naturally swing around you.

Once you get that feeling, bring the club down to the hitting area, not by dropping your arms, but by bending from your hips. This will allow you to swing the club freely up the plane line with speed and effortless control, letting physics do the work for you.
