Conscious Decisions Can Lead to Subconscious Actions

A preshot routine is important, but don’t develop paralysis from overanalysis before you even hit a shot.

By Jack BirdPublished: October, 2005

A good routine is simply a way to prepare your body to hit the shot you visualize.

Jack Nicklaus had one of the best preshot routines in the game. Nicklaus never hit a shot before he was ready, which means that he never hit a shot before he was focused on where he wanted the ball to go. Nicklaus has said that 90 percent of his shot’s results were determined by the way he set up.

In properly setting up to a shot you must have a sense of what every part of your body must do to hit the desired shot.

When throwing a ball, we don’t carefully position ourselves before the throw. We determine where we want the ball to go, then allow our subconscious to take over. Golf is no different, with the exception that a club is used to hit the ball. A swing is the movement your body makes to allow the club to hit the ball to the desired target.

Sound too simple? Give it a try. You might like the results.
