Knowing the fundamentals of chipping will help lower your scores.

The chip shot incorporates fundamentals from the full swing and putting stroke. The following tips provide the framework for good practice habits:

1) Turn your lower body 20 to 30 degrees to the left (for right-handers) of your intended line with your heels almost touching. Keep your weight on your forward foot throughout the stroke.

2) Maintain your posture, grip pressure and slight forward hand press while turning through the ball. Resist the temptation to scoop the ball in the air. Remain in balance and finish your stroke by turning your hands, arms, shoulders and clubface to your intended target line after impact, with the toe of the club pointing up.

3) In many instances, you don’t want your focus to be directly on the hole. Read the green from your location to determine the best place to land the ball so it rolls toward the hole.

4) Experiment with different clubs, and remember that the length of the chip and contours of the green often dictate whether a shot should be high and soft or low and running.
