Vary Your Routine

Different methods of practicing will help you improve your overall game.

By Jack BirdPublished: November, 2005

Want to make your practice sessions more productive? Try the following:

1. Compete with another golfer with similar skill levels.
2. Don’t hit the same shot twice. Change something, such as the club, lie angle or distance.
3. Putt all second putts from a club length further from the hole than their original position.
4. Vary the lie and club selection when hitting from the sand.
5. On the course, if allowed, play two balls off the tee, then play your second shot from the least desirable position. Continue to use this method until you have holed out.
6. On the driving range, try to hit different shots, such as a hook or slice, and vary the ball trajectory as much as possible. This will enhance your shot-making ability and help identify the types of shots you need to work on.

As Gary Player once said: “The more I practice the luckier I become.”
