But two years after its debut, the housing development around the course ran aground, forcing developer Lennar Homes to scrap its management agreement with Troon Golf and close the course in October 2007. However, two years later, there’s a new ownership group and management company and Escena reopens this month with a facility no one has seen before. The clubhouse is finished, as is the short-game area with a practice putting green. “Those things never were part of the facility in the past and now they are, so that’s one reason we’re so excited,” said Mark Tansey, president of Sunrise Golf, which is managing Escena. “So while we’re not really introducing a new course, we’re certainly introducing a complete facility to the public.” Sunrise Golf was hired immediately after Escena’s closure to maintain the course, located just east of Palm Springs International Airport. “It’s important that golfers know that the course was never shut down and left,” Tansey said. “We’ve had a crew maintaining it from the day it was closed.” When new ownership took over, it did so through an arrangement with Lennar that stipulated “the entire golf facility needed to be restored and completed,” Tansey said. “So we were hired to bring back the course to its original luster as well as finish the entire facility. We’ve gone back and renovated the turf, redid the bunkers and waste areas and added thousands of plants.” The golf course’s layout is the same that greeted golfers in November 2005. It measures 7,173 yards from the tips and features generous fairways and views of the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa Mountains. But everything around the course will be new. “It’s really going to knock people’s socks off,” Tansey said. “The clubhouse’s mid-century architecture is unique for the region. It embraces the culture of old Palm Springs and the materials and treatment are unlike anything anyone has done out here. It’s incredible.” Tansey said green fees most likely would be $80 Monday through Thursday and $90 Friday through Sunday. “I think we’re embracing a different idea and aren’t overly concerned with how the economy is doing,” Tansey said. “It’s not that we’re ignoring it, but we’re delivering something that redefines the golf experience and not basing our success or failure on external factors. We’re going to tell a great story and people that are into golf or looking for a new type of experience are really going to enjoy this property. In a lot of ways, we’re going to create a new type of bar that other properties will have to aspire to.” More information: (760) 778-2737 or visit escenagolf.com.
