Frank Sinatra’s annual celebrity bash in the desert finds a new home at Eagle Falls.

By Joel BeersPublished: November, 2009

Eagle Fallas has received numberous accolades since opening in 2007.
One of The biggest parties in the desert has a new home, and it looks like it will hang its hat there for a while.

The 21st annual Frank Sinatra Starkey Hearing Foundation Celebrity Invitational signed a five-year contract with Fantasy Springs Resort Casino this year to use the Indio property and its Eagle Falls Golf Course for what Sinatra himself once called “his little party in the desert.” The 2010 event will be held February 18-20.

The tournament is one of Southern California’s biggest charity golf-related gatherings. All proceeds go to the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center at Eisenhower Medical Center, the charity for which the Invitational was launched.

It’s slightly different than most celebrity tourneys in that three parties are held in addition to two rounds of golf. All of the social events surrounding the tournament will be held in the resort’s 100,000-square-foot special events center, including the gala black-tie event on Saturday. The Smothers Brothers will headline that gala, while the Gatlin Brothers and Gary Mule Deer will provide entertainment throughout the weekend. Tournament coordinators also host a luncheon and fashion show on Friday afternoon.

“This is possibly the biggest and most high-end function put on for ladies in the Palm Springs area all year long,” said Judy Vossler, tournament vice president.

The event’s philanthropic thrust appealed to the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians, which runs the resort and casino.

“The tribe felt that it could help the tournament realize greater charitable proceeds than in any previous year,” said Paul Ryan, the resort’s general manager. “The tribe is a part of the community, it always has been and always will be, and this is an event that benefits everyone in the community.”

Thanks to the Invitational’s 20-year history in the Coachella Valley, it has an existing infrastructure that makes the new host’s job much easier.

“They certainly have a well-oiled machine, with volunteers and sponsors,” said Willie Maples, Eagle Falls’ PGA director of golf.  “And I know golfers will love our course. It’s beautifully maintained and has received a lot of accolades in a relatively short time.”

Eagle Falls boasts a majestic Clive Clark-designed layout that blends modern and traditional elements. It opened in 2007.

The co-host of the 2010 event is Robert Wagner, the honorary spokesman is Dick Van Dyke and the honorary celebrity marshal is Norm Crosby. Other celebrities that have confirmed include William Devane, John Callahan, Ann Meyers Drysdale, Dennis Farina, Steve Garvey, Joe Mantegna and Kevin Sorbo.
