Best of both worlds

Ideal for family vacations as well as adult getaways, Rancho Las Palmas is two resorts in one.

By Rob LyonPublished: November, 2009

Rancho Las Palms offers a serene atmosphere for both families and couples.
If you haven’t visited Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa in a few years, you’re in for quite a surprise at one of the Coachella Valley’s oldest resorts. The Rancho Mirage destination, for years owned by Marriott, was purchased three-and-a-half years ago by ClubCorp, which invested more than $40 million in a massive renovation.

The result is one of the most distinctive resorts in a region that certainly has no shortage of great places to stay and play.

The most eye-catching aspect is a huge water park, Splashtopia, which has helped Rancho Las Palmas become a huge draw for families. The only on-site resort water park in the greater Palm Springs area, it includes a 425-foot lazy river, two 100-foot-long waterslides, a waterfall, mountainside Jacuzzi and enough watery tricks and treats to keep anyone occupied for hours.

Along with the water park, the renovation included a spa expansion, four new restaurants, a refurbished exterior and remodeled guestrooms.

Though it’s caught on with families (in April, it booked more rooms than any month in its 30-year history) the resort is not just for parents and kids, says director of marketing Josh Herman.

“What’s great about our property is that we’ve been well received by families because of the water park, but we’re set up as two resorts in one” he said. “We have a large central plaza, and if you go the left, you wind up at the water park and rooms where families stay. But if you go to the right, there’s a section of about 100 rooms geared more toward adults. The rooms are furnished a little differently, there’s an adult pool and the spa.

“It’s the best of both worlds, actually. If you don’t want to see a kid during your stay, you certainly don’t have to.”

The resort offers 25 tennis courts and three Ted Robinson-designed nine-hole courses, intended to attract golfers seeking a relaxing, leisurely experience.

“It’s in beautiful condition but at only 6,200 yards it’s definitely not geared for players looking for a huge challenge,” Herman said. “But a lot of golfers do stay here and play other courses, since we’re so centrally located.”

The resort does have arrangements with other properties in the region, including Mission Hills Country Club, where the LPGA Tour’s Kraft Nabisco Championship is played every year.
