High five

Celebrating its fifth anniversary, SilverRock Resort is getting better with age.

By Joel BeersPublished: November, 2009

SilverRock can play as long as 7,553 yards from the back tees.
The general rule of thumb when it comes to golf courses is that it takes about five years for a new track to grow into what the designer originally intended.

In that respect, there’s never been a better time to play the Arnold Palmer-designed SilverRock Resort, a La Quinta course now in its fifth season.

“Every year the course just seems to be getting better and better,” said Randy Duncan, SilverRock’s director of golf. “The trees and desert landscaping are maturing and it’s never looked better.”

The overseeded course re-opens November 4. In January, it hosts the Bob Hope Classic for the third straight year. It’s one of the few courses used by the PGA Tour open to the general public, and with green fees of $125 through Christmas, it is one of the most affordable.

“We do limit play a couple of weeks before the event in order to get the course in prime condition for the Tour, but the bleachers are up in early January and it’s really fun for people to come out and play the course as it will be set up for the pros,” Duncan said.

Actually, the public can tee it up from longer tees than the pros. The Tour tweaks the course each year and last year the championship tees were around 7,350 yards, Duncan said. Usually, the back tees are a whopping 7,553 yards.

“If you want to challenge yourself, you can certainly play from the back, but with six sets of tees we have yardage that can accommodate any golfer’s game.”

Along with the PGA Tour affiliation, SilverRock has received accolades from national golf and vacation magazines, including recognition from Golfweek Magazine as the 32nd best municipally owned course in the country.

One non-golf related amenity is the course’s outdoor patio, which can seat up to 50 people.

“We have a lot of non-golfers who come here to eat breakfast or lunch, use the wireless Internet or just enjoy the spectacular views of the Santa Rosa Mountains,” Duncan said. “We’re becoming a very popular place not just for golfers.”

Green fees rise to $165 after Christmas through mid-April, but the course routinely lists specials at its website.
