Five locals to watch at LPGA Tour’s Kia Classic

Veteran Castrale looks to gain momentum early in 2010; Joh hoping to capitalize on sponsor's exemption.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: March, 2010

Palm Desert resident Nicole Castrale has failed to find the winner's circle since capturing the 2007 Ginn Tribute Hosted by Annika Sorenstam (COURTESY: Kraft Nabisco Championship).

The LPGA Tour’s Kia Classic Presented by J Golf marks the first time there’s been a full-field event in San Diego County since 1993, and there is no shortage of Southern Californians on hand at La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad.

Here are five players with local ties to keep an eye on:

Nicole Castrale. Happy birthday, Nicole. The Glendale native and Palm Desert resident celebrated her 30th birthday a day before the Kia Classic teed off, and it’s a safe bet she’d like nothing more than to celebrate with her second career victory. Castrale hasn’t won since breaking through with the title at the 2007 Ginn Tribute Hosted by Annika Sorenstam, and although she has remained a fixture on the LPGA since then — she finished 33rd on the money list in 2008 and 52nd in 2009 — her brother, Peter, who is the general manager at Talega Golf Club in San Clemente, says she’s poised for bigger things in 2010.

Anna Rawson. With plenty of renown as a model and spokesperson for various enterprises, Rawson has yet to assemble a golf resume that matches her off-course portfolio. The former USC women’s golf team member has registered only one top-10 finish in her career — a tie for 10th at the 2008 Bell Micro LPGA Classic — and heads into this season without fully exempt status. It will be interesting to see how she fares in her first event of 2010.

Eunjung Yi. The South Korea native, who now call Murrieta home, captured her first career victory at last year’s Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic. But that was her only top-10 finish in 2009, so she’ll look to have a more consistent 2010 campaign.

Jane Park. In 2009, the former standout on the UCLA women’s golf team struggled to match the accolades of her stellar 2008 rookie season. Park will look to rebound in 2010, and she has the natural talent needed to do so.

Tiffany Joh. Even though she’s not a full-time LPGA Tour member, Joh has the talent to match up with many players in the field this week. The Rancho Bernardo resident and former UCLA All-American is playing on a sponsor’s exemption this week and will look to make the most of playing in front of friends and family.
