Welcome to the club

Some private facilities are adding touches of class for members.

Public courses aren’t the only ones going grand these days. Private clubs also are giving members another reason to visit and stay a while, offering amenities such as barber shops and department store-sized golf shops in an exclusive setting.

Last November, Vellano Country Club’s clubhouse opened in Chino Hills. The 46,000-square-foot structure is impressive inside and out, from the stonework and Tuscan tile to the ornate light fixtures and high-end furnishings.

“We knew when we built the clubhouse that we had to spare no expense to be the premier club in the Inland Empire,” PGA General Manager Jimmy Han said.

The size, Han said, might be overwhelming to some members. But the clubhouse’s features, such as changing facilities with steam rooms, a golf shop stocked with clothing from leading designers and fine dining served in a 40-seat wine cellar room, along with the Tuscan-inspired architecture and views of valleys and mountains, deliver a “true private club,” he said.

Big Canyon Country Club is currently building a 62,000-square-foot, two-story clubhouse. The Newport Beach club is tight-lipped about the details, but we know that in addition to the expected features — a golf shop, locker rooms, banquet rooms and an upscale restaurant — the clubhouse will have card rooms, a mixed grille with a display kitchen, a private dining wine cellar and a 7,000-square-foot spa and fitness center.

Not all clubs, however, think bigger is better.

“We’re going smaller but smarter,” PGA General Manager and Chief Operating Officer Heinz Hofman said about plans at La Quinta Country Club.

La Quinta’s $25.7 million clubhouse will open in the fall on time and on budget, but with 12,000 fewer square feet, Hoffman said. The two-story, 42,800-square-foot Mediterranean clubhouse, which has been dubbed “Santa Barbara style,” is designed with white plaster walls, a red tile roof and wrought iron balcony railings.

All of the same amenities will return — albeit in more sophisticated digs — including a barber shop and massage, manicure and pedicure treatment rooms.

New to the clubhouse is a larger fitness facility with a steam room, and an expanded golf shop that will offer more high-end boutique items.

Readers Feedback:

I emailed this link to Vellano CC in Chino Hills to a SLO classmate whose father grew up in the area in the 1930s. This is her comment: "Wow--not the Chino I knew! Dad began playing and caddying when he was about 10 0r 12 at the Los Serranos course. He loved golf."
