The Northern Trust Open will honor area military personnel and their families by providing free admission during the tournament, a private hospitality venue and a veterans’ appreciation reception. Tournament week at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades is Feb. 12-17.
“Anyone who knows me knows that the military is very close to my heart,” said NBA legend Jerry West, executive director of the Northern Trust Open. “My closest brother, David, died in the Korean War when I was 12 years old, and my life has been forever shaped by that tragic loss. It’s so important to me to show our brave military men and women – and their families – how much their service and sacrifices are appreciated.”
As part of its support for the Birdies for the Brave military outreach initiative, the PGA Tour will provide all active duty, retired and Reserve military members and their dependents with complimentary admission to the tournament all week. Military tickets can be obtained by anyone with a valid Department of Defense-issued ID and provide grounds access on Tuesday, and grounds access and suite access to the Birdies for the Brave Patriots’ Outpost near the 10th green from Thursday through Sunday. In addition, veterans can acquire complimentary tickets by contacting the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System.
Other activities include:
On Monday, Feb. 11, the PGA Tour will host a veterans’ appreciation reception at the West Los Angeles Fisher House on the grounds of the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare Center (11301 Wilshire Blvd.) from 3-5 p.m. There will be continuous shuttles to the Fisher House from the various VA locations.
On Wednesday, Feb. 13, the Northern Trust Open will host its second annual Operation Shower/Birdies for the Brave group baby shower for 40 military moms-to-be whose spouses are deployed. Actress Melissa Joan Hart will serve as the event’s special guest host in the Birdies for the Brave Patriots’ Outpost.
Saturday, Feb. 16, has been designated as Military Appreciation Day at the Northern Trust Open. As part of the celebration, a ceremony will take place at 7:30 a.m. on the first tee at Riviera Country Club. Other activities scheduled for the day include the placement of the American flag on 10th green, which will be tended by uniformed military service members. Military members will also serve as announcers on the 10th tee.
