Carlton Oaks Golf Club played host to the San Diego Junior Masters this week. Juniors from around the country and around the world participated in the event, which took place July 6-9. Championship and 13-14 divisions played 36 holes, while 11-12 girls and boys and 9-10 boys played 18 holes. Girls ages 9-10 and 7-8 and boys 7-8 played nine holes. Boys and girls six and under played 18 holes at par-3 Colina Park Golf Course in San Diego. In the Boys Championship division, ages 18 and under, Allan Jun of Vista and Brent White (Australia) tied for first place after finishing with two-round totals of 1-over-par 145. Jun would go on to win. Ikaika Velasco (San Diego) and Carlos R. Kim (Chula Vista) finished fourth and fifth after totals of 148 and 149, respectively. In the Girls Championship division, Moriya Jutanugarn of Bangkok, Thailand smoked the rest of the field by shooting 72-73 and winning by seven shots over San Diego's Minjia Luo (152). Maria Andrea Legaspi (Temecula) shot 155 and Debbie De Villa (San Marcos) tied for fourth at 157. Danny Ochoa of Rancho Santa Fe eventually won the Boys 13-14 division after tying with Miguel Tabuena (El Cajon) at 3-under-par 141. Jonah Texeira (Los Angeles) was alone at third after an even-par 144. Bobby Gojuangco (San Diego) and Jake Scornovacco (Rancho Santa Fe) rounded out the top-five at 145 and 146, respectively. In the Girls 13-14 division, Bangkok's Ariya Jutanugarn (143) won in similar fashion as her older sister, toppling her nearest opponent, Carlsbad's Amanda Kahn (150) by seven shots. Aliea Clark (Carlsbad) wrapped up third after a 152 total. In the Boys 11-12 division, Issei Tanabe of Huntington Beach outlasted Tyler Moore (Escondido) and Corey Shaun (San Diego) by a stroke. Tanabe sealed his second-straight Junior Masters title by draining a 17-foot par putt on the final hole, finishing at 143 and besting Moore and Shaun by a single stroke. Lou Daniella Uy won the Girls 11-12 division with a 1-over-par 73 in the final round and a 148 total. Escondido's Haley Moore finished second at 151, while Alexia Gariepy of Murrieta concluded in third place at 152. China's Tianlang Guan engineered a stellar 36-hole effort to win the Boys 9-10 division, following an opening-round 72 with a 69 in the second round to beat the field by three strokes. Norman Xiong (San Diego) was the top Southern California finisher, posting a 148 to finish in fourth place. In the Girls 9-10 division, Andrea Lee (Hermosa Beach) defeated a strong international contingent for the title. She shot a cumulative 68 to top Singapore's Amanda Tan by a shot. Gavin Noble of Cartersville, Ga. won the Boys 7-8 division with a total of 70. Nicole Abelar of the Phillipines won the Girls 7-8 division with a 69. Arcadia's Tiffany Kong finished third with a 75. The Boys 6-and-under champion, Kota Murakami (Japan) shot 108 to best San Diego's Eric Doyle by three strokes. Arcadia's Kate Villegas won the girls 6-and-under division by shooting a 135, which was 25 strokes better than the nearest competitor. For full results, visit futurechampionsgolf.com. |
