Top junior golfers from around the globe arrived in San Diego County last week aiming to win one of 12 divisions in the Junior World Golf Championships. As has been the case in recent years, there was a strong international flavor among the champions, with foreign golfers accounting for eight of the 12 titles. The 15-17 groups played 72 holes, and all other age groupings played 54 holes. Here is a recap of each division: Boys 15-17: Fifty-eight players made the cut at the South Course at Torrey Pines, but only three managed to post scores under par. Canada’s Adam Svensson was the steadiest of all, totaling a 6-under-par 282 to defeat Jorge Fernandez Valdes of Argentina by a single stroke. Valdes began the final round three shots ahead of Svensson but struggled with a 4-over 76 in the last round. Top local finishers: Jake Katz (Thousand Oaks) fired a 3-under-par 69 in the third round that propelled him to a fourth-place finish at 1-over. Rancho Santa Fe’s Danny Ochoa tied for fifth at 3-over par, and Kevin Techakanokboon of Cerritos finished was one of four golfers to share eighth place at 5-over. Complete scores Girls 15-17: The girls played the North Course at Torrey Pines as a par-74 test, and Mexico’s Gabriela Lopez outclassed the field with a 14-under-par total and a seven-stroke victory. A highlight of her performance was a hole-in-one on the scenic par-3 sixth hole in the third round. Seven different countries (United States, Mexico, Canada, Philippines, Argentina, Japan and Singapore) were represented among the top 13 finishers. Top local finishers: San Diego’s Hee Wook Choi, who won the American Junior Golf Association’s Sean O’Hair Junior All-Star Championship earlier this month, finished in third at 5-under par. Another San Diegan, Minjia Luo, tied for 16th at 4-over. Complete scores Boys 13-14: India’s Viraat Badhwar held off a final-round charge from Rico Hoey (Rancho Cucamonga) to seize the title at Riverwalk Golf Club. Badhwar, one of the longest-hitting players in the field, posted a 4-under-par 68 in the final round en route to an 8-under total — one better than Hoey, whose 6-under 66 included three closing birdies in a row. It would have been the third Junior World title for Hoey, who won the 9-10 title in 2006 and the 11-12 crown in 2008. Other top local finishers: After opening with a share of the lead, Northridge’s Jonah Texeira ended up tying for third at 1-under par. Ben Doyle of La Jolla finished fifth at even-par. Zaragosa went on to win the playoff. Other top local finishers: Fullerton’s Ryan Rhee tied for fifth at 3-under par. Hunter Epson of Long Beach tied for seventh at 2-under par.
