PGA Tour’s 2010 West Coast Swing events in Southern California set up consecutively

Scheduling tweaks raise questions about appearances of Woods, Mickelson at usual Southland stops.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: November, 2009

The PGA Tour has released its tournament schedule for the 2010 season, and among the most prominent changes is the ordering of the early-season West Coast Swing events.

The FBR Open in Scottsdale, Ariz., has been moved to the end of the West Coast Swing, while the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am has been switched on the schedule with the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades.

This has positioned the Tour’s three annual Southern California events — the Bob Hope Classic in the Coachella Valley (January 18-24), the Century Club of San Diego Invitational at Torrey Pines in San Diego (January 25-31) and the Northern Trust Open (February 1-7) — to be held one week after another.

While the Hope and San Diego tournaments have been scheduled consecutively in recent years, the PGA Tour’s event in the Los Angeles area has typically been scheduled toward the end of the West Coast Swing.

The change in scheduling for 2010 ensures that the trio of Southern California tournaments are the first PGA Tour events in the continental United States for the season. As usual, the year will open with the winners-only SBS Championship and the Sony Open in Hawaii.

The schedule change, as well as other factors, raise questions about which West Coast Swing events Southland natives Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, the first- and second-ranked players in the world, will enter.

It’s safe to assume Woods and Mickelson will forego both Hawaii events and the Hope — Woods has never played in the Hope and hasn’t ventured to play in Hawaii since 2005, while Mickelson has been absent from the Hope since 2007 and last teed it up in Hawaii in 2001.

The annual stop at Torrey Pines has long been considered a lock on both players’ schedules, but 2010 presents an interesting dilemma — immediately following the trio of Southern California events is Pebble Beach, then the WGC-Accenture World Match Play Championship. The Pebble Beach Pro-Am isn’t normally a schedule fixture for Woods, but he might make an exception and play in it this year since the 2010 U.S. Open in June also will be held at Pebble Beach.

Mickelson, on the other hand, has been part of the field at Pebble Beach every year since 1995. If he plays there in 2010, the 39-year-old could be setting himself to compete five weeks in a row should he also play at Torrey Pines. The San Diegan opened his 2009 season by playing five weeks in a row, which included a win at the Northern Trust.

Basketball Hall of Fame member Jerry West, the new tournament director of the Northern Trust Open, has already stated that one of his goals for the 2010 edition of the event is to bring back Woods, who hasn’t entered the tournament since 2006.

Torrey Pines has been the site of some of Woods’s greatest tournament success, including a victory in the 2008 U.S. Open. However, the tournament is no longer sponsored by Buick, which also no longer sponsors Woods. The absence of that relationship might be an enabling factor in altering his West Coast Swing schedule.
