Southern Californians Anthony Paolucci and Kristen Park continued to establish themselves as two of the most talented junior golfers in the country by winning their respective divisions in the AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions last week at Blessings Golf Club in Johnson, Ark. Paolucci, a Del Mar resident who won the AJGA Thunderbird International Junior over Memorial Day weekend, began the final round of the 72-hole event one shot back of Patrick Rodgers. But the 17-year-old Paolucci assembled a wild finishing score of even-par 72 that included six birdies, two bogeys and two double bogeys that was enough to post a 1-under-par 287 total and best Rodgers, who shot 75, by two strokes. “I was very good at keeping a good frame of mind when things started to get tight,” said Paolucci, an incoming senior at La Jolla Country Day School. “For some reason I did a very good job of staying in the moment.” Park, a Buena Park resident who attends Sunny Hills High School, had at least a share of the lead after all four rounds in the girls division. Three consecutive scores of 1-over-par 73 were eclipsed with a 1-under-par 71 on the final day, good enough to post a 2-over 290 total and win by four shots over Burbank’s Emily Tubert. “I have been preparing for this summer all year long,” said Park, who won the AJGA Under Armour/Hunter Mahan Junior Championship in April. “I feel very accomplished winning this tournament with all the great players in the field.” Tubert, coming off of a victory in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship, did not break par in any of her four rounds but will have plenty of chances for better scores at Blessings. It’s the home course for the University of Arkansas, where she’ll enroll this fall and compete as a member of the women’s golf team. “I love this golf course. It is definitely challenging, but I’m really excited,” she said. Other Southern California competitors at the AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions: • In the boys division, San Diego’s Jay Hwang, the runner-up in the 2009 U.S. Junior Amateur, finished tied for 14th at 13-over par. • Shane Lebow of Santa Barbara, an incoming student at Stanford University, tied for 16th at 14-over par. • Michael Kim of Del Mar tied for 18th, and Preston Valder of Yorba Linda tied for 21st. • In the girls division, Rancho Cucamonga’s Gabriella Then finished fifth at 12-over par. • Carlsbad’s Rachel Morris, who will attend USC in the fall, finished seventh. • UCLA commit Ani Gulugian (Irvine) finished 14th. • Corona’s Michelle Piyapattra, who will attend Columbia University this fall, tied for 16th.
