Beau Hossler of Rancho Santa Margarita and Esther Lee of Los Alamitos won their respective divisions at the American Junior Golf Association’s Trader Joe's Junior Championship hosted by Pat Hurst. The 54-hole event was held July 20-22 at Castlewood Country Club’s Hill Course in Pleasanton, Calif.
Hossler, who plays out of Mission Viejo Country Club, sank a 4-foot par putt on the final hole to post a 1-under-par 69 and an 8-under-par 202 total. That was just enough to defeat San Jose’s Shotaro Ban, who registered a 5-under 65 in the final round en route to a 203 total.
“This is a huge stepping stone for my career,” Hossler said of his first AJGA victory. “I've been working hard on my game to get an AJGA win and it means a lot to me.”
Other prominent local finishers in the boys division were Westlake Village’s Nick Thomas and San Diego’s Eric Sugimoto, who each tied for fifth at 2-under par. Daniel Chian of Covina and Alex Angard of Encino were part of a four-way tie for 10th at 1-over.
In the girls division, Lee experienced a roller-coaster ride of a final round. Beginning the last day four shots behind leader Kristina Nhim of Buena Park, Lee tallied eight birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey to post a 2-under-par 68 and a 2-over total of 212. Nhim struggled with a 2-over-par 72 in the final round and also finished at 212 through regulation, leading to a playoff that Lee ultimately won for her first AJGA victory.
“I was able to focus and make a lot of putts today,” said Lee. “It feels great to finally win one and I'm looking forward to more tournaments.”
Other top local finishers in the girls division were Bethany Wu of Diamond Bar (11-over-par 221, eighth place) and Beaumont’s Tiffany Chan (15-over-par 225, 11th place).
