Aaron Goldberg, a Carlsbad resident and former standout on the San Diego State men’s golf team, won the Canadian Tour Players Cup in Winnipeg, Manitoba over the weekend. It was the first triumph on the circuit for Goldberg and it gave him an exemption into this week’s RBC Canadian Open on the PGA Tour. That event begins Thursday at St. George’s Golf and Country Club just outside Toronto, Ontario. Celebrating his 25th birthday the day after he won Sunday, Goldberg began the final round of the 54-hole event three shots out of the lead. He made up that ground with a 5-under-par 66 at Pine Ridge Golf Club to post an 11-under total, one stroke better than runner-up Jim Rutledge. Prior to his Players Cup win, Goldberg had notched top-10 finishes in three of his previous four Canadian Tour starts, including a tie for second at the Times Colonist Open in May. The win gave the Encinitas native $48,000 and vaulted him to the top of the Canadian Tour Order of Merit. Earlier this year, Goldberg Monday-qualified for the PGA Tour’s Sony Open. He made the cut but did not finish, posting rounds of 70-71-70 to tie for 72nd and earn $10,615. Goldberg also competed in the Nationwide Tour’s Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic earlier this month, an event won by Long Beach native Peter Tomasulo. Goldberg tied for 36th there after a promising start with opening rounds of 67-67.
