Woodland Hills resident Aaron West captured the 2010 Ventura City Championship in dramatic fashion over the weekend, making eagle on the par-5 18th hole at Buenaventura Golf Course for a two-shot win over Marshall Colby.
West, who entered Sunday’s second round of the 36-hole event one stroke behind first-round leader Colby, remained one shot down when he reached the 18th tee. West hit his approach on the short par 5 to 10 feet, draining the eagle putt for a closing 65 and a 6-under par total while Colby hit his drive out of bounds for a bogey to ultimately finish at 4-under.
In Saturday’s first round at Olivas Links, Colby, a Thousand Oaks native who is an incoming sophomore on the University of Oregon men’s golf team, grabbed the lead with a 2-under-par 70. West posted a 1-under 71.
A relative newcomer to tournament play, West notched his first triumph in 12 starts. He grew up in the Los Angeles area and recently graduated from San Diego State.
