Ten Southern California women golfers earn All-Pac-10

Same players also shine in Pac-10 Championship.

By Denise DeChainePublished: April, 2010

Ten Southern California players were honored last week by being voted by the league’s coaches to the Pac-10 Women’s Golf All-Conference Team. These announcements came one day after the conclusion of the Pac-10 Championship at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.

Five of the Southern Californians — UCLA sophomore Stephanie Kono, Arizona State freshman Jennifer Johnson (La Quinta), UCLA senior Sydnee Michaels (Temecula), USC junior Lizette Salas (Azusa), and USC sophomore Jennifer Song — received first team All-Pac-10 honors. UCLA sophomore Brianna Do (Long Beach) and UCLA freshman Tiffany Lua (Rowland Heights) received second team honors, and USC senior Belen Mozo, USC freshman Cyna Rodriguez and UCLA junior Glory Yang received honorable mention.

Kono is a returning first team All-American who has had five top-10 finishes this year. She won April’s PING/ASU Invitational at Karsten Golf Course with a final round 6-under-par 66 (9-under-par total), also helping the Bruins claim the team title over Arizona State. Kono finished tied for eighth at the Pac-10 Championship with a 4-over-par 220 and is one of eight women that will represent the United States at the 2010 Curtis Cup on June 11-13, at the Essex Country Club in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass.

Johnson is the only freshman on the first team this year. She has had five top-10 finishes this season and had a runner-up finish at last summer’s U.S. Open. Johnson was also one of seven amateurs given an exemption to the LPGA Tour’s Kraft Nabisco Championship at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage and one of four to make the two-day cut. Johnson finished tied for 48th at the Pac-10 Championship and will be accompanying Kono at the Curtis Cup this June.

Michaels, a returning All-American, has had four top-10 finishes this season. She finished tied for second at the Mason Rudolph Invitational at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn., in September with a 9-under-par finish after rounds of 70-65. Michaels finished tied for 18th at the Pac-10 Championship and also was named as an alternate for the Curtis Cup team this June.

Salas has had five top-10 finishes this season including the top spot at the Turtle Bay Collegiate Invitational at the Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu, Hawaii where she finished at 8-under par marking her third career victory. In March, Salas finished in fourth with a 2-under-par 214 at the Bruin Wave Invitational at Robinson Ranch Golf Club in Santa Clarita, Calif., and tied for 23rd at the Pac-10 Championship.

Song has had five top-5 finishes this season and became the second female in history to win two USGA titles in the same year when she claimed the U.S. Women’s Amateur and U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links in 2009. Song has won two titles this year along with two second-place finishes. Song has had 14 career rounds in the 60s, the most in school history, and finished tied for third at the Pac-10 Championship (219). Song will join Kono and Johnson in representing the U.S. on the Curtis Cup team this June.

Do has had four top-20 finishes this season, two of which were in the top-10. Do finished tied for 21st at the Pac-10 Championship and her best performance this 2009-10 season was at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational at the University of Texas Golf Club this March where she finished tied for third with a 4-over-par 220.

Lua has had four top-10 finishes this season and backed up team member Kono at the PING/ASU Invitational with a 4-under-par 68 on the final day. She also tied for third at the Pac-10 Championship (219). Lua will be accompanying teammates Kono and Michaels this June as one of the Curtis Cup team members.

Mozo a three-time returning All-American, has bounced back from a shoulder injury with a solid campaign. She had her best finish this season landing in the top 10 with an even-par 216 at the inaugural Bruin Wave Invitational.

Rodriguez has had five top 40 finishes, including her first top-10 finish this season at the Pac-10 Championship where she tied for 10th with a 5-over-par 221.  She also tied for 15th at the Bruin Wave Invitational and tied for 24th at the Turtle Bay Collegiate.

Yang has had 15 top-20 career finishes, and eight in the top 10. Yang finished tied for 10th at the Pac-10 Championship and her best finish this season was when she took sixth at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes Estates with a 4-over-par 220.
