Lawrence Ree of Redondo Beach and Minjia Luo of San Diego each posted one-shot victories in the American Junior Golf Association's Junior All-Star event at Marshallia Ranch Golf Course in Vandenberg Air Force Base, held August 24-26 near Lompoc. In the boys division, Ree began the final round of the 54-hole stroke-play event two strokes behind leader Lawrence Tu of Irvine, but closed with an even-par 72 to post a 4-under 212 total while Tu backed up to 2-under 214 after struggling to a 76. Florida's Tae Wan Lee shot 69-69 over his final 36 holes to finish alone in second at 3-under par. A pair of Southern Californians — Brock Drogosch of Westlake Village and Colin Morikawa of La Cañada Flintridge — tied for fourth at even-par 216. La Jolla's Ben Doyle claimed ninth place at 4-over-par 220. In the girls division, Luo was four strokes clear of second-place Jocelyn Chia entering the final round. Luo came back to the field with a closing 75 and a 2-over-par 218 total, but it was still enough to best La Crescenta's Chia, whose even-par 72 in the final round produced a 3-over 219 tally. A host of local players finished inside the top 10. Fullerton's Stephanie Lau was fourth at 11-over-par 227, Katelyn Reynolds of Los Angeles was fifth at 228, and Sophia Chen (Newbury Park) shot 229 to finish sixth. This was the AJGA's second-to-last 2010 tournament in the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series, which specifically presents opportunities for boys and girls age 12-15 to develop their skills and earn entry into AJGA Open tournaments.
