Kim, who earned $1 million for the victory, defeated first-round leader Sean O’Hair on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff Thursday. O’Hair found trouble off the tee on the 650-yard, par-5 15th and ended up with a double bogey, while Kim reached the green in four shots and safely two-putted for a bogey and the win. “It feels wonderful,” said Kim. “I did what I had to do to win.” Kim shot a 5-under-par 66 in the second round after an even-par 71 over the first 18 holes. The select field of four golfers had to complete the first round on Thursday after extreme wind gusts forced play to be halted after 16 holes on Wednesday. O’Hair held the lead after 18 holes with a 3-under-par 68, while Camilo Villegas was a shot behind with a 69. While O’Hair shot a 69 in the second round to force the playoff, Villegas fell out of contention after following up with a 1-over 72. Orange native Hunter Mahan, who won last year’s Kiwi Challenge, finished in third place, three strokes off the lead. Mahan actually had a share of the lead with nine holes remaining, but recorded two bogeys down the stretch. |
