Del Mar resident Anthony Paolucci has qualified for the match-play portion of the U.S. Junior Amateur at Egypt Valley Country Club in Ada, Mich. Following an even-par 72 Monday, the upcoming senior at La Jolla Country Day School shot a 1-under 71 Tuesday for a 1-under total through 36 holes and a share of 23rd place. Those inside the top 64 (without ties) are assured of a spot in match play, which begins Wednesday. Two other Southern California residents qualified for the next stage of the prestigious junior tournament. La Cañada’s Anton Arboleda, who will join the men’s golf team at UCLA this fall, shot a 2-over 74 in the second round and tied for 35th. One of the biggest movers during the final 18 holes of stroke play was San Diego’s Alexander Schauffele, whose 3-under-par 69 vaulted him into a tie for 30th. The rising senior at Scripps Ranch High School had struggled the first day with a 4-over 76. A few local players came up just short of qualifying for match play. Daniel Lee of Valencia and Thomas Lim of Moorpark finished tied for 69th at 6-over par after matching rounds of 76-74. Bellflower's Matthew Fliss was in contention for qualifying for match play after an opening 73 but backed out of the running after a 78 Tuesday that left him tied for 81st at 7-over. Gavin Hall of Pittsford, N.Y., made history with a 10-under-par 62 Tuesday, the lowest round in U.S. Junior Amateur history. But even his 9-under total wasn’t enough for medalist honors — that title was grabbed by Curtis Thompson, who earned the No. 1 seed in match play with rounds of 68-66 (10-under). Defending champion Jordan Spieth tied for second with Hall after rounds of 67-68. Visit Southland Golf all week for more updates from the U.S. Junior Amateur.
