Paolucci wins Thunderbird International

Del Mar resident goes wire-to-wire in capturing first AJGA title.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: June, 2010

Seventeen-year-old Anthony Paolucci of Del Mar shot 66-69-69 to win the American Junior Golf Association’s Thunderbird International Junior over the weekend at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Paolucci led after each round of the 54-hole event en route to a 12-under total and a three-stroke triumph over Denny McCarthy of Burtonsville, Md. Paolucci lost his advantage to McCarthy briefly during the final round after bogeys on the fourth and sixth holes on the Raptor Course, but made eagle on No. 7 and birdie on No. 8 to regain a lead he wouldn’t relinquish.

“I’ve been in a similar position before going into the last round and won a couple and lost a couple, and I hadn't won an AJGA event before, so I wanted to get that monkey off my back,” Paolucci said. “I really wanted to win one before I got too old and I'm glad it happened today.”

The junior at La Jolla Country Day School was the only player in the field to post three rounds in the 60s, and his tally was the third-lowest in the 11-year history of one of the most prestigious AJGA tournaments.

Paolucci, who moved to San Diego County last year, has already committed to be a member of the USC men’s golf team after he graduates high school in 2011. Last month, he shot a 4-under-par 68 in U.S. Open local qualifying at Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside to advance to 36-hole sectional qualifying.

Patrick Cantlay of Los Alamitos finished tied for third at 8-under par, while San Diegan Jay Hwang, runner-up at last year’s U.S. Junior Amateur, tied for 11th at 2-under par. Fullerton’s Jay Hwang was another shot back in 14th place.

On the girls side, Rachel Morris of Carlsbad finished alone in third at 2-under par, one stroke behind Cindy Feng and Laetitia Beck. Feng defeated Beck for the title on the fourth hole of a sudden-death playoff. Three other Southern Californians finished inside the top 10: Valencia’s Alison Lee was sixth, Irvine’s Ani Gulugian tied for seventh, and Buena Park’s Kristen Park finished ninth.
