Bhavik Patel’s run through the match-play portion of last week’s U.S. Amateur ended in Saturday’s semifinals, as he lost to eventual champion Byeong-Hun An 3-and-2 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. The 17-year-old An went on to defeat Ben Martin 7-and-5 in Sunday’s final match, becoming the youngest victor in the 109-year history of the event — breaking the mark set by 2008 champion Danny Lee. Through 10 holes, Patel and An’s match alternated between being all square and An holding a 1-up advantage. The 18-year-old Patel made par on the 11th hole to take a 1-up lead after An made bogey, but it was a brief edge, as An birdied the par-5 13th to bring the match back to all square. Then, Patel bogeyed each of the next three holes while An won them all with pars, and the match ended on the 16th hole. “It’s been an unbelievable week. I learned a lot from it,” said Patel, a Bakersfield resident and a sophomore on the men’s golf team at Fresno State University. “Hopefully we can keep the good play going throughout the college season.” Visit the USGA website for complete results from the match between Patel and An.
