![]() Billy Casper says he’s humbled to be honored with the same award as men like Byron Nelson and Gerald Ford (COURTESY: PGA of America). The San Diego native will receive the 2010 PGA Distinguished Service Award on August 11 at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wis., site of the PGA Championship. As much as Casper, 79, accomplished on the golf course, he has given back significantly off of it, providing the impetus for this recognition. In 1992, he started his Youth Foundation, also known as “Billy’s Kids,” whose beneficiaries include the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Diego, the San Diego Junior Golf Association and the Down Syndrome Connection. Others who have received the Distinguished Service Award include Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Byron Nelson, Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush. “When you take a look at those who have been named before me on this award, it is truly humbling,” Casper said. “I think how fortunate a person is to have a skill that gives one the opportunity to travel and build relationships with so many people around the world.” Jim Remy, president of the PGA of America, lauded Casper as “an advocate for the next generation of Americans.” Regarded as one of the best putters of all time, Casper won 51 PGA Tour titles, including a pair of U.S. Opens and the 1970 Masters. His success is especially remarkable considering he thrived in the heyday of Palmer, Nicklaus and Gary Player. |
