A premier venue for tournaments and groups, Yorba Linda’s Black Gold Golf Club hosted the fourth annual Vista Del Verde O.C. Pro-Am on Wednesday, January 13. The event brought together 28 teams of four golfers, which consisted of three amateurs and one PGA professional. Three pros — Greg Knight, Jeff Templeton and Scott Heyn, who is the general manager at Black Gold — fired a 3-under-par 69 to force a playoff at the end of 18 holes. After each player made par on the 10th, the sudden-death battle proceeded to the risk-reward par-5 18th, where Knight made birdie to claim the individual title. Eric Lohman, the PGA Director of Golf at Oak Creek Golf Club in Irvine, led his amateur trio to a runaway victory in the team competition with a combined score of 121, eight strokes clear of the marks posted by Knight’s and Heyn’s squads. A member of Heyn’s team — King Baggot — had an electric moment on the 155-yard, par-3 seventh, as he used a 6-iron to record a hole-in-one. Following the golf, participants relaxed and dined at a banquet that featured am exciting raffle, with proceeds going to Black Gold’s Scholarship Fund that raises PGA education money for the facility’s assistant golf professionals. The grand prize was a five-night, six-day condo package in Pinehurst, N.C.
