Plethora of local players contend for boys and girls titles.

A pair of Southern Californians were victorious at the AJGA’s ClubCorp Mission Hills Desert Junior, held June 21-24 on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage.

Irvine’s Brian Campbell fired three under-par rounds en route to a three-stroke win in the boys division — his first AJGA title — while Alison Lee of Valencia captured her fourth title on the prestigious junior tour.

“It’s like a massive weight off of my chest,” said Campbell, who shot 71-68-71 for a 6-under-par 210 total. “I knew I could do it; it was just a matter of time.”

Xander Schauffele of San Diego finished second in the boys division at 3-under-par 213 and Alexander Forss of Temecula took third place with a 1-under 215. Northridge’s Jonah Texeira and Ladera Ranch’s Andrew Levitt were part of a four-way tie for fourth at even-par 216.

In the girls division, Lee admitted she was nervous about heading into the final round, but her anxieties were quelled with a chip-in birdie on the first hole.

“My iron play was really good today and my approach shots kept me in good position through most of the round,” Lee said.

Kristen Park of Buena Park climbed into contention with a 6-under-par 66 in the final round, ultimately good enough to give her second place with a 4-under-par 212 total. Beverly Vatananugulkit of Cerritos finished in third place at even-par 216.
