Buick Invitational returns to Torrey Pines

PGA Tour stop slated for February.

BY JOEL BEERSPublished: December, 2008

A high point in the history of Torrey Pines Golf Course came last June, with Tiger Woods’ stirring playoff victory over Rocco Mediate in the U.S. Open.

PGA Tour golf returns to the San Diego facility on Feb. 2, 2009, for the Buick Invitational. It’s still unclear whether Woods, the winner of six Buick titles (including the last four), will be far enough along in rehabilitation from knee surgery to compete.

In 2009, the event comes a couple of weeks later than usual, right before the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and the Northern Trust Open.

The event schedule includes practice sessions on Monday and Tuesday, a pro-am on Wednesday and the actual tournament Thursday through Sunday.

The Monday practice session is free. Tuesday also is a practice day, with a military appreciation luncheon at noon and a Buick Family Days Clinic on the fourth hole of the North Course at 3:30 p.m.

The Allianz Global Investor pro-am takes place Wednesday on both courses, and the actual tournament will be held Thursday through Sunday, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Once again, a continuous series of shuttles will run from Qualcomm Stadium and Del Mar Show Park. Parking and round-trip shuttle service is $15 per vehicle.

Tickets are $16 for Tuesday’s practice sessions and $26 per day Wednesday through Sunday. A weeklong season badge is $105, and tickets for seniors ages 60 and over are $16.

Preferred parking passes are available through a group of ticket badges beginning at $400 for two badges, which includes access to the Century Club Skybox and grandstand seating near the 18th green.
