Carlsbad's La Costa Canyon High School won the CIF Boys High School State Championships Wednesday at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach. The Mavericks won the team championship with a 381, five shots better than runner-up Jesuit High School. A playoff was needed to decide the individual champion, as Cole Seeger (Westlake), Michael Weaver (Clovis West) and Kevin Dougherty (Vista Murrieta) all finished at two-under-par 70. Dougherty, a senior, won his second playoff in a row to win the individual title. He also won the Southern California Regional CIF Championship at the SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta after dropping a 30-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole.
