On Wednesday, June 3, three area high schools qualified for the CIF California State Championship by virtue of strong performances in the CIF Southern California Championship at the SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta.
La Costa Canyon won the 10-team competition with a cumulative five-over-par total of 365. Great Oak and Westlake high schools each finished three strokes behind in a tie for second, gaining access to the state tournament at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Monterey on Wednesday, June 10.
Low individual honors at the Southern California tournament were shared by Kevin Dougherty (Vista Murrieta) and Michael Weaver (Clovis West), who each posted six-under-par 66s. They are among six local individuals who qualified for the state tournament.
