Jeff Burda’s rollercoaster ride in the California Senior Amateur Championship finished at a high point this week, as his final round 4-under-par 68 stretched his wire-to-wire lead into an eight-stroke victory, tying the tournament scoring record of 211 at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach. Challengers came and went through the week for Burda, who began the tournament with a scintillating 6-under 66 but stumbled the next day with a 5-over 77. On day two, Jim Knoll of Sunnyvale crept to within one stroke of the leader, but could not hold on as Burda stretched his lead throughout the final day with accurate ballstriking (one missed green in the final round) and strong putting. The race for second between Boyd Martin and Antioch’s Mark Miller came down to a botched 5-footer on the final hole by Martin, whose consistent play kept him in the hunt for most of the week. Miller’s second place finish ensured him the points needed to take home 2009 California Senior Player of the Year honors. Other Southern California golfers who made strong appearances at the tournament include Banning’s Ray Vanyo, who finished fifth with a 7-over 223, Kemp Richardson of Laguna Niguel who finished tied for sixth with an 8-over 224, and Newport Beach’s Chris Veitch who finished tied for eighth with a 9-over 225.
